Welcome to Sweden, Sat! How many times have you been here before?
– This is my third official visit to Sweden. I was in Sweden back in the early 2000’s to meet up with a few business colleagues when I first launched A&R Network, which at the time I created and ran for Clear Channel Entertainment worldwide, which as you may be aware was at the time the world’s largest radio ownership group and live entertainment company. I was their global VP of A&R, which was pre-A&R Worldwide. Iwas also invited to participate at the Peace & Love Festival a few years ago and had a great time in Sweden connecting with both industry friends in Sweden, but also discovering some great new talent.
What’s the main reason for your visit this time?
– The main focus on this visit is to reconnect with some existing Swedish music industry colleagues, as well as to see a great new developing act called Ruh who showcased at MUSEXPO in Los Angeles and had some great feedback. Ruh’s been working with Jens Lundberg from Blue Lemon Management who turned me on to Ruh. Jens has been a regular supporter and attendee of MUSEXPO in Los Angeles and was introduced to me by my good friend in the US Charley Londono; a well-respected music attorney. I’m in Stockholm to see Ruh’s performance as well as hear their new album and meet additional friends in Sweden.
You’ve been involved with many different Swedish acts the last years. What do you think about the Swedish music scene in general?
– Sweden has always been consistent in producing great talent. I feel the Swedish music scene in general, per capita is one of the best in the world and has been consistently for numerous decades. Acts like Royal Concept, Fou De Toi, Ruh, Tove Lo, Say Lou Lou and many others are exciting me at the moment. I’ve had the pleasure of working with some wonderfully gifted Swedish acts over the years including Robyn, Teddybears, Ella Rouge, etc. and to be honest I’ve never really come across a bad Swedish band – that’s a great compliment to Swedish talent.
Among a lot of other things, you arrange the annual Musexpo in Los Angeles and publish both A&R Worldwide and One Movement FM Magazine. Could you please tell us about these projects and the other things you do?
– That is correct. A&R Worldwide ( http://www.anrworldwide.com ) celebrates its 10th year this year as the leading independent global artist discovery and development company. It’s very humbling to know that the music industry internationally still looks upon us as the leader in discovery and development of talent and international insight and consulting. However, it’s something my incredible team and I never take for granted. We work harder and smarter each year to continually raise the bar and evolve.
– In addition to A&R Worldwide, we also host the global music industry gathering MUSEXPO and recently launched the world’s first of its kind all digital global music industry publication One Movement for Music, which has been very well received and we have great ideas to evolve it substantially in the coming months.
– My start in the business was radio almost 30 years ago doing an import show and that has evolved into Passport Approved, which is a show I created 10 years ago on the acclaimed Indie 103.1FM in Los Angeles. The show is now on 21 radio stations worldwide with over 10 million cumulative listeners and helps break a lot of new artists from all over the world. We broadcast in key FM radio markets including Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Portland, Berlin Germany, Lima Peru, 2XM which is national radio in Ireland and many others.
– In addition, we also produce the annual Global Synch & Brands Summit in Los Angeles, now in its 5th year at MUSEXPO, which attracts over 100 music supervisors and brand representatives and has helped place several hundred songs into TV, film, trailers, brand campaigns and videogames as a result of the event, where managers, labels, publishers, writers, etc. get face to face time with key music supervisors. We’ve taken variations of this key event to events in Canada, England, Australia, Germany and Finland.
– Also, we co-host the Worldwide Radio Summit in Los Angeles, which attracts some of the most important radio and music minds from the USA and global markets. We host the event with our good friends and partners AllAccess.com, which is the world’s No.1 platform for all things radio online.
