I veckan släpptes den i musikbranschen i år mycket omtalade och rosade dokumentären Sound City Real to Reel [Sony Music] på DVD och blu-ray. Samma dag släpptes även soundtracket på CD och vinyl.
Sound City Real to Reel är debut i rollen som filmregissör för Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures). Idén till filmen om Sound City Studios i San Fernando Valley, Kalifornien fick Dave Grohl förra året efter att ha köpt det legendariska mixerbordet NEVE 8028 från studion, där artister och band som Neil Young, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, Guns n’Roses, Dio, Rage Against The Machine och Metallica (m.fl, m.fl) har arbetat genom decennierna. Grohl själv var i studion första gången då han för drygt tjugo år sedan, 22 år gammal, körde ner längst östkusten från Seattle för att spela in Nirvanas klassiska album Nevermind.
Så här beskriver Grohl Sound City Real to Reel :”It’s a film about America’s greatest unsung recording studio. Deep in California’s sun burnt San Fernando Valley, tucked away behind the train tracks and dilapidated warehouses, it was the birthplace of legend. It was witness to history. It was home to a special few, intent on preserving an ideal. An analog church, a time capsule. The last bastion of a craft defied by technology. It was rock and roll hallowed ground. And it was our best kept secret. Now I want to tell its story. Documenting a personal journey beginning twenty years ago that culminates in a full circle musical reunion, Sound City is a film about the truth, the craft, and the integrity of rock and roll. Like the dark hallways of Sound City Studios itself, it might not be pretty… But it’s for fucking real!”
I soundtracket ingår bl.a nyinspelade låtar med artister och musiker som Paul McCartney, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age Them Crooked Vultures m.m) och Trent Raznor från Nine Inch Nails. Dave Grohl själv medverkar bl.a i låten Mantra tillsammans med Homme och Reznor. I Cut Me Some Slack spelar han tillsammans med McCartney och de tidigare Nirvana-medlemmarna Krist Novoselic och Pat Smear. Med Stevie Nicks vid mikrofonen gör han You Can’t Fix This, en låt tillägnad Fleetwood Mac-sångerskans bortgångne gudson. Bland de många producenter och ljudtekniker som intervjuas kan nämnas Rick Rubin och Butch Vig.
Sound City Real To Reel är en värdig och inte alltför mytologiserande musikdokumentär om ett ämne som ofta glöms bort när de stora episka rockstjärnelegenderna berättas: Studions betydelse.
